Research Opportunities

Prospective Graduate Students

Students who are interested in focusing on drilling engineering and related topics as a Graduate Assistant – Research (GAR) on their M.S. and/or Ph.D. degrees may send their C.V.s, statements of purpose, and a writing sample (i.e. published paper or final project for a course) to Dr. Roman Shor and will need to apply to, and be admitted by, the graduate school.  Full details and requirements for graduate admissions may be found here.  Students should review prior work published by the research group and indicate in their statement of purpose which area(s) they are interested in studying and how they will leverage their background and interest to make a substantial research contribution.

Why should students consider doing their graduate work at A&M?

  • Relevant, timely, and fundamental research addressing current and future challenges in drilling systems, conducted in close collaboration with industry partners across a wide range of sectors.
  • Global alumni network in the energy industry and across the engineering disciplines.
  • No. 1 undergraduate and No. 2 graduate programs in Petroleum Engineering in the world and a top 10 engineering program in the United States.

Application deadlines are typically August 15th for spring admission and December 15th for fall admission.

Current Undergraduate Students

Several opportunities exist for undergraduate students to pursue projects and research related to drilling engineering each year.

A&M Drillbotics Team – each year, the Society of Petroleum Engineers holds the Drillbotics contest in which students design, build and program an autonomous drilling rig.   Each September, a multidisciplinary team will be formed to represent A&M.

Senior Design Projects – students interested in pursuing a design project related to drilling engineering or geothermal energy should reach out directly to Dr. Shor.  Prior teams at the University of Calgary have presented their projects at industry conferences and/or have won prizes for best design projects.

Directed Study Projects – students interested in learning more about geothermal energy and sustainable energy systems should reach out to Dr. Shor to inquire about opportunities to take PETE 485 (Directed Studies).
